Infineon introduces OPTIGA Trust Charge, the industry’s first authentication solution for secure wireless charging

[Munich, Germany, November 5, 2020]Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) expands its OPTIGA™ Trust product lineup with a certified solution for electromagnetic inductive wireless charging. The new OPTIGA™ Trust Charge is the industry’s first embedded security solution available for the Qi 1.3 wireless charging standard. It is a wireless charger for small personal Electronic devices such as smartphones, earphones, tablets, wearables or health tech devices and can charge up to 15 W.

Due to the convenience of wireless charging, users’ acceptance is getting higher and higher. But uncertified charging devices can compromise the battery life of handheld devices and, in extreme cases, even harm the user. Device authentication with OPTIGA™ Trust Charge helps prevent damage to consumer devices with dangerous counterfeit chargers and protects consumer brands from reputational issues.

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) publishes the Qi standard and conducts corresponding tests and certifications for terminal devices. Qi has grown steadily over the past few years. According to a recent report by Strategy Analytics, a well-known research organization, Qi terminal shipments in 2019 were 465 million units, a year-on-year increase of 27%. Although smartphones hold the largest market share, the number of wearables with wireless charging is also growing. The new 1.3 version of the standard mandates strong cryptographic authentication for wireless charging devices. The wireless charger can authenticate itself to the charging device, proving that it is Qi 1.3 certified. Only then will the device be charged at maximum power.

Infineon recommends that hardware storing keys and certificates be at least EAL4+ certified, with PP0035 and PP0084 as the protection profiles for evaluation.

Infineon OPTIGA™ Trust Charge is a turnkey solution that provides comprehensive system integration support including embedded software, host software, development boards, reference boards and documentation for quick and easy design. In addition, Infineon can also provide customized services to inject WPC-authorized certificates and keys into the security chip in the CC EAL6+ secure production environment of the Infineon factory. Therefore, Infineon’s security hardware solutions can help product manufacturers to provide turnkey solutions without additional investment in building a secure production environment.

OPTIGA™ Trust Charge comes in a USON10-2 package (3 x 3 mm²), which is optimized for small devices and suitable for any charging platform. It is ideal for a variety of consumer and industrial applications, with a wide operating temperature range from -40° to +105°C. Samples are available now.

In addition, a special version of the in-vehicle app will be launched in early 2021.
